I didn't think to listen for the fans before pulling the plug, but that machine is so quiet I'm not sure I'd have been able to hear anything anyway. I can't remember having previously encountered a computer you couldn't turn off with the power button. So should I just ignore this as a one-time mystery, or report it in the BSOD forum? The laptop on the same network was working normally and responsive during the above events. The computer then started up normally (using the power button) and since then has behaved normally so far as I can tell. In the end I pulled the plug out of the UPS (causing instant blackout of course), waited a few minutes, plugged it back in. No response to power button - short push, or hold it down for 4 seconds, no response to either.
No response to keyboard input, not even Ctrl-Alt-Del. No mouse cursor, and no response to mouse movement or to pressing mouse buttons. On return to computer it looked completely normal - all the normal icons in their normal places, taskbar ditto, as usual one of my wallpaper slideshow pictures on the screen - but the computer was completely unresponsive. Went away for a few minutes to do something else. I'd been working normally at the desktop computer, checking news, tennis, scientific stuff. I'm not sure I've ever seen this before - though I've been in computers 50 years and in PCs since the first ones came out 40 years ago. Both computers almost 6 years old, both off-the-shelf stock except that long ago I added 8 GB RAM to the laptop, so it now has 12 GB. Both computers running Windows 10, 64 bit, version 2004, build 19041.508 - the desktop is Pro, the laptop Home. Home network with desktop Dell XPS 8700, laptop Dell Inspiron 15 R 5537, Canon printer Pixma TS9120, Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone.
